EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
